How to Play

Everything you need for your first match, from the lobby to destroying the Nexus.

The basics

Lane Legends is a 6v6 battle on a map with three lanes. Each team has towers along every lane and a Nexus in its base: a giant laser turret. Destroy the enemy Nexus to win.

Waves of minions march down every lane every 30 seconds. You fight next to them, kill enemy minions for souls (the shop currency) and XP, take towers, and push into the enemy base. Matches usually last 15 to 30 minutes.

Lobby, queue and parties

When you join, you land in the temple courtyard lobby. From there:

  • PLAY 6v6 puts you in the public queue. Once at least 2 players have waited 45 seconds, the match starts and any empty spots are filled with bots, so you never wait forever.
  • Party: invite friends (in your lobby, or friends online in Lane Legends) and queue together. Your party is always on the same team, up to 6 players.
  • Private Match: create a match with a 5-letter code, share it, pick teams and choose bots ON or OFF.
  • Practice: the dojo lets you play any hero at level 25 with lots of souls against training dummies. Perfect for learning a new kit.
  • Objectives: daily, weekly and lifetime goals. See Objectives below.

Disconnected? A Rejoin your match button appears in the lobby. A bot plays your hero while you're gone and hands it back when you return.

Picking your hero

Every match starts with team select, then hero select (60 seconds). Click a hero to see their kit, then LOCK IN. Two players on the same team can't lock the same hero. Nobody enters the map until everyone has locked in.

Then everyone waits in their fountain behind a glowing barrier for 20 seconds. Use that time to buy your first items (press B). When the barrier drops, the battle begins.

Souls and last hits

Souls buy items. You start with 600 and get 1 every second, but most of your souls come from last hits: landing the killing blow on an enemy minion.

  • Melee minion: 30 souls. Caster minion: 24 souls. Minion and jungle rewards grow 5% every minute of the match.
  • If a minion dies to something else near you, you still get a smaller share, but last hits are worth much more.
  • Hero kill: 250 souls + 15 per level of the victim (more on a kill streak). Assist: 100.
  • Destroying a tower gives your whole team 300 souls.

Tip: watch the enemy minion's health bar and only attack when one more hit will kill it. It's the single best habit for getting ahead.

Levels and ability points

You earn XP from minions, monsters, kills and objectives near you, plus a little over time. Every level makes your hero stronger and gives you an ability point.

  • You start with 1 point and get one per level up to level 14: 15 points, exactly enough for every rank.
  • Q, E and R go up to rank 4. Spend points in any order. Each rank adds that ability's bonus (shown as "Each point" in the tooltip).
  • Your ultimate (F) unlocks at level 8, then ranks up at levels 11 and 14 (rank 3 max).

Click the + above an ability or press Ctrl + its key to spend a point. Each hero page has a suggested order.

Items and the shop

Press B to open the shop. You can buy in your base (or anywhere while you're dead). You have 6 item slots, and selling gives back 50% of the price.

  • Items come in five types: Defense (health, barriers), Resist (block weapon or spirit damage, anti-CC), Spirit (ability power), Weapon (attack damage and speed) and Utility (speed, cooldowns, vision).
  • Big items are built from cheaper parts. Buy the parts first: they count toward the upgrade's price.
  • The ⭐ Recommended tab shows a build for your hero in buying order. It's a good default, and every hero page on this site lists it too.
  • Know your damage type: Weapon heroes' abilities grow with Weapon items, Spirit heroes' abilities with Spirit items. Basic attacks always grow with Weapon items.

See every item on the Items page.

The map

Three lanes (Top, Mid, Bot) connect the two bases, with a river and jungle in between. Each lane has two towers per team, plus the Nexus. Towers hit hard and their damage ramps up on a hero they keep shooting, so don't stand under an enemy tower without minions in front of you.

Minions get tougher as the match goes on: by 10 minutes they have about double their starting health, and they keep growing until about 30 minutes. A lane you ignore late in the game will push into your base.

Teleporters link the top and bottom of the map. Stand on a pad and press Y to channel for 2.5s; you arrive with +15% move speed for 5s. Each teleporter has a 5-minute cooldown, and the rev-up sound can be heard nearby, so enemies may see you coming.

Jungle monsters

Between the lanes are jungle camps: wolves, raptors, golems, bears, lynxes, boars and more. Killing them gives souls and XP (growing over time) and heals you a little when you clear a camp. Some monsters live inside buildings and will chase you anywhere inside.

Monsters fight back and chase you up to a leash distance from their camp. They also react from far away when you shoot them.

Big objectives

These give your whole team a reward. Fight for them, and watch for the enemy taking them.

River Sprite
In the river. Small and quick to take.
+20% move speed for 1 minute, +100 souls
Moon Watcher
Between the river and the big objectives.
Every enemy hero is revealed for 20 seconds, +150 souls
Soul Vault
On top of the jungle buildings. Opens 4 minutes in, then every 3 minutes.
Souls for the whole team: 300 at the start, growing every minute up to 900
Mammoth
A huge beast near the top side of the map.
+20% weapon and spirit damage for 2.5 minutes, +400 souls
Rex
A huge beast near the bottom side of the map.
Empowered minions and +15% move speed for 2.5 minutes, +400 souls

Fog of war and brush

You only see enemies inside your team's vision: around your heroes, towers, minions and wards. Everything else is hidden in the fog of war. Tall brush hides you from enemies outside it, unless they get very close.

  • Use brush to set up ambushes or escape.
  • Buy a Ward Totem to place vision in the river or jungle.
  • Buildings block sight and the camera: an enemy could be waiting inside.

Dying, recalling and the fountain

When you die, you respawn in your fountain after a timer that gets longer as the match goes on (a few seconds early, much longer late). Your fountain heals you fast, and you leave base with bonus speed until you fight.

Press H to recall home. You have to stand still for 6s, and taking damage cancels it. Recall when you're low or have souls to spend.

A team losing badly can surrender after 8 minutes (most of the team has to vote yes).

Objectives and account level

Every match also earns account XP: 120 for a win, 60 for a loss, plus 10 per kill. Account levels unlock skins and emotes.

For more account XP, complete Objectives. Hold Tab anytime (or click Objectives in the lobby):

  • Daily: 3 new objectives every day, like "Get 8 kills" or "Last-hit 60 minions".
  • Weekly: 3 bigger ones every week.
  • Milestones: lifetime goals in tiers (wins, kills, towers...).

Progress is saved at the end of each match that has at least 4 real players. During a match, the panel shows what you've done so far in blue. Click CLAIM to collect your XP.

Unlocks: Shadow skin at level 2, Royal skin at level 5, Golden skin at level 10, Cheer emote at level 2, Dance emote at level 4, Laugh emote at level 7.
